I'm in quite the festive mood here, crafting handmade holiday decorations and feeling a bit like an old soul. Teehee! I've been on a crafting spree, using all sorts of items that were destined for the trash. It's been a bit chaotic with my crafting - or should I say "upcycling".
In fact, friends and family have joined in, saving their trash for me. Lucky me, right? Though my craft materials are overflowing, some upcycling ideas come easily, while others require a bit more thought.
I'm ready to spread some Christmas inspiration your way, so you can get into the crafting spirit and sprinkle your home with holiday cheer.
First up, let's talk about a craft involving a humble tuna can. I assure you; there are no lingering fishy smells from this can. I even have step-by-step instructions for making this personalized Christmas ornament to adorn your decor.
After cleaning and drying the can, I applied two coats of chalk paint, allowing it to dry. Then, I cut out a circle of wrapping paper and affixed it to the inside of the can.
I used a small clip art piece I'd saved long ago - it might be from Graphic Fairy, but who knows? With a clear vision in mind for my DIY Christmas ornament, I applied Mod Podge inside the can and on the back of the wrapping paper. Then, I did the same for our jolly St. Nick clip art.
To upcycle one of our trees, I didn't purchase any pine this year for crafting. I'll be using it everywhere! I hot glued a piece of pine from the tree branch inside the can to cover any scratches (from my experimenting with this piece).
Not stopping at the inside, I added another piece of clip art to the back of the can. I wish I'd thought to stamp the year on it, but that idea came later. You can see, I may have been a bit heavy on the Mod Podge, and of course, I couldn't wait for it to dry before I snapped a pic.
I drilled a hole in the top of the can, threaded twine through it, and hung it on our DIY Charlie Brown Christmas tree in the dining room. I was delighted with how this DIY ornament turned out - hard to believe it used to be a tuna can. Oh, the possibilities of turning trash to treasures are endless!
Next, an ugly duckling got a marvelous makeover and became the swan it was meant to be. Chalk paint came to the rescue with a single coat of moss green chalk paint and a tree transfer. This tin was on its way to becoming the belle of the ball!
What do you think of this transformation? I've fallen in love with this one - it's as if it was always meant to be in its new look.
I'm quite pleased with how this glass jar turned out. Can you tell I've been on a rustic kick lately? I'm loving the rusty spots and grime I've added to each piece lovingly.
Have you seen the jam jars at the Dollar Tree that folks use in their decor and tiered trays? I found a wooden one my Grandpa made many years ago and decided to see what I could create with it.
Since there are two sides, I had two chances to create new decor just by flipping it over. Lucky me! One side features Santa, and the other has a bird. Birds always remind me of my Grandpa, so I knew a bird had to be on one side.
I have more to share, but that will have to wait for another day. Christmas is my favorite time of year, and crafting for Christmas this year has kept me busy. What do you think of our easy holiday DIY projects? Would you consider making one of your own?
Cheers,
Cara
Looks like you have been busy and are excited about the upcoming holiday! Me too! You are the only person I know that can take a stinky tuna can and turn it into something wonderful! I can imagine an entire tree decorated with those cute ornaments! I can't get over the amazing transformation on that tin, it's gorgeous now! Here's to lots more Christmas crafting! Blessings, Donna
ReplyDeleteYour ideas for xmas decorations are excellent! I love your upcycled tuna cans <3 I try to make one or two new christmas tree ornaments every year and it is great to 'discover' them next year ;-)
ReplyDeleteThank you! I enjoy seeing what I can make with ordinary items heading to the trash bin. I bet it is a joy seeing those familiar ornaments every year, I know I enjoy being reminded of those memories from Christmas past.
DeleteSo many fetive ideas, Cara! I can't wait to try some of these too. You always come up with the most creative ideas, most of which I would have never thought about in a million years. I'm always learning something new. Keep up the good work and I can't wait to see what else you have in store this season. Hugs, CoCo
ReplyDeleteThank you so much CoCo! I went through a period in life where I did not think I was creative due to a teacher's comment on my work, but after working with an art teacher in adulthood, I found I am just creative in other ways. I love to push myself to the limit and see what I can make with ordinary items. I am in love with your Christmas decor, you always have such lovely decorations in your home!
DeleteHi Cara, I love your upcycled crafts. I especially love how you reused the tin cans and how beautiful they turned out as Christmas decor. I have a few tin cans of my own that I'll be working on in a few days. Thank you so much for sharing your craft ideas with us at The Crazy Little Love Birds link party #13.
ReplyDeleteThank you Stephanie, tin cans are an amazing wonder, I cannot seem to throw away anymore. I am accumulating quite the stash! They are wonderful for doing just about anything with, plus I love that I am working on reducing our carbon footprint on the world.
DeleteGosh, Cara! You are the queen of using trash and turning them into works of art. That TIN is just incredible!!! I want that in my house. This was so fun to read! Thanks so much for sharing at Home Imagined this week!!
ReplyDeleteI am so glad you enjoyed this craft Rachel. Wow, the Queen of Trash, lol... I will take that badge of honor, I keep chipping away at reducing our footprint, and it would seem, I am helping friends and family too since they are saving their trash for me now. Lucky me, I admit, the basement is overflowing with projects awaiting their makeover.
DeleteWow Cara! SO many great ideas friend. You made those stinky tuna cans into a stinking cute ornament!!! You've inspired me. Pinning. Happy Thanksgiving. XO- MaryJo
ReplyDeleteI am so happy you enjoyed this one MaryJo. I was keeping them back, but did not know I would go in the direction of creating an ornament with it when I began saving them. I have found I really enjoy letting go, creating, and then taking the pics afterward these days. I get lost in what I am doing, and have been forgetting to share in process photos.
DeleteGreat ideas, Cara! I love how you transformed that teddy bear tin. It looks very vintage now.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much Ann, once upon a time teddy bears were all the rage in my tween years... now? Not so much, so why not make items over into what reflects our taste now without spending any money. Sounds good to me! Have a wonderful weekend!
